I never ever want to be without a dishwasher (been there done that). I rinse, scrape etc most gunk off and only turn on when I have a full load. Rinse first then in the dishwasher.
Sometimes I'll wash a few that haven't fit inside the dishwasher.

I rinse my dishes off and soak any hard baked stuff. I had a D/W for years but the past 30 I have lived without but standing at the sink was getting too hard so I bought one this year and am loving it. The dishes sparkle and the water is really hot more so than one can stick their hands in so they are more hygienically cleaned I feel. My pots were a bit blacked on the bottom and they are now sparkly clean again....
