Should Australia abolish free trade?

By Raymond . Created on 03 Jul, 2020
Should Australia abolish the free trade deals with have, thereby encouraging Australian manufacturing and industry? Or should we continue to watch our economy collapse due to no, (or low,) import duties and our total inability to compete with various countries economically, forcing higher and higher unemployment locally, and heavier reliance on both other countries for supplies, and the government for an income source.

Really? Anyone here actually read the documents involved? Just look at the meat trade with the US. Ours is suppressed while they can openly provide you with an edited version. Yeah? Sounds fair.
Or fair trade with Au Steel vs PRC Steel. That one is really fair.
Or our wine fair trade? Why is our local wine dearer here than there.

I think most countries in the world have some form of free trade agreements in regard to some goods. But wise countries produce as much as they can of what they need themselves. So I think we should increase our internal production of Goods that we use every day.

Gidday Raymond. I honestly don't know if your logic is correct or flawed in some way. I don't know enough about how international trade works and the supposed benefits vs drawbacks of a free trade arrangement. I probably should know more at my age. Do you know of any countries that don't have free trade deals and how they are doing economically?

I just want to emphasise, this is not aimed at any one country either. It is in general. We should still allow all imports, just with an import duty, so as to allow and encourage local economic growth. At this point in time, Australian manufacturing is very minimal, as we just cannot compete economically with other countries. And we are far to reliant on other nations for our way of life. For example we have less th...

Australia should stop relying on goods from other countries and start manufacturing again. A defence study showed Australia would collapse in 3 months if overseas trade collapsed due to something like a pandemic. No fuel means no food due to no means to transport it. Australia has to go back to manufacturing locally.
