Should defensive driving courses be mandatory?

As an extra road safety measure, should the completion of an approved defensive driving course be mandatory prior to getting your licence or having it reinstated after disqualification?

The several years of progression for a full driver's licence is absurd and ridiculous. There is no need for the current system at all. What's needed is a compulsory defensive driving skills course for all new drivers regardless of age.

Driving courses should be mandatory for everyone wanting a licence. Anyone who fails their driving course can try again in 6 months. Fail 3 and you don't get a licence. We would reduce congestion and the road toll. Of course, the government would not make as much money off fines and so would never accept this.

They make no revenue if every one obeys the law simple as that ,why blame the Governments if you do the right thing ??

Hi ChrisWho, While I agree that taking basic lessons through a registered driving school is worthwhile, would an additional defensive driving course be helpful?

We made sure both our children did a defensive driving course once they had their license

I have been lobbying for years that this be a definite part of getting an Australian licence I also believe that the age to get a learners permit should be 18 although I would consider 17 but definitely not earlier than that & I also believe that the government should Never have allowed anyone to get there licence in any other language except ENGLISH ... I don't care where people come from But if you want a licence ...

Hi Christine,, You seem as passionate about this as myself. I also agree that being proficient in English should also be a pre-requisite,

A great way for new drivers to learn properly from the outset that would help lowering the road toll

Hi Marjorie. that's unfortunate but I still believe that these courses have a lot of value.
