Should the Australian government phase out coal-mining by 2050 to give our Pacific Island neighbours more support against climate change consequences – eg. water-logged homes, schools, communities?

Omg we have something like 1.5% of emissions a year as apprised to China , who is 50.something monthly , stop picking on Australia and go after those countries that have huge emissions.
I’m all for renewable energy, but we are not where near as bad as the world thinks

We should work towards sustainable energy. Set up tidal power stations, with our coast it is a sensible alternative. But it will take the existing methods to do this. So dont kill the horse before you have another way of pulling the cart. I would have greater faith in climate change advocates in a sailing ship than those using lots of avgas flying around grandstanding.

The connection between coal and greenhouse gases seems to be established but until renewables are proved to be reliable or we move to nuclear power, coal, of which we have heaps, seems to be a good source of baseload power.

If we had a government that would actually take action (and I'm not just talking about the current batch of deniers), they could invest money into sustainable power instead of carting lumps of coal into parliament and we could give up coal long before 2050 AND create more jobs in that industry.

Have you spoken to the climate experts and next time they get onto a jet remind them about "climate change" or driving their fancy cars. Tell Prince Harry not to fly the 2 Jets on the next holidays they go on.

Yes, you are so right. Until people stop flying around in jets and driving fuel-powered cars we can do nothing else but burn more coal!

I have talked to miner's about this and they have said "NO", don't believe what you read or hear.

Don't believe what people say if they have something to lose, like their jobs! Try listening to scientists instead.

Fran, has enough to say but all celebrities, Royals, Rich people, Pollies say No to climate change and next minute they are flying off in there jet on there holidays. The miners work hard and scientists won't be losing there jobs. Give us some proof and tell other countries to mind their own business and keep jobs in Australia. Don't send the jobs overseas. It boils down to it, to close the mines in ...

We have alternative power sources now so we should use them and encourage our trading partners to do so too.

I voted yes ... but my real answer is no, they should not phase it out over a long time, they should stop immediately.

The alternatives are available, but are not being used because of coal and oil industry lobbying.
